PDF Upload Errors
Why this happens
If a PDF you've tried to upload has been rejected, it's because the file contains PDF encryption. This isn't something you did wrong, and you don't need a password to open or view the file yourself.
Some PDFs have a security layer applied when they're generated or exported, which restricts things like content extraction and document editing. This is common with certificates issued through platforms like TCPDF, but it can also happen with any PDF that had encryption applied when it was downloaded or exported from another application, before being uploaded to Canyou.
Our upload system checks for this kind of encryption automatically and blocks the file as a safety precaution, even though there's no password required to open it.
How to fix it
You have two options to get this working:
Option 1: Print to PDF or Save As
Open the PDF in a program like Adobe Acrobat, Preview (Mac), or a free PDF tool, and use a "Print to PDF" or "Save As" function. This usually removes the encryption automatically and produces a new, unencrypted copy you can upload.
Option 2: Request an unprotected copy from the issuer
If the PDF was issued by a certificate or training platform, you can ask them for a copy without the security layer applied.
